If someone had told me some years ago that I would be training for an Ironman, I would have said: YEAH right…J
However since coming to New Zealand and realising that ANYTHING is possible, I changed my mind and now I am only a few weeks away from THE BIG event in Taupo.
The road to Taupo is not as easy, and I knew that from the beginning…long training hours, hard sessions in the pool, on the bike or in the hills are normal and it is true that sometimes the social life might stay a bit behind due to tiredness. However, due to great support from family and friends, the road trip so far has been outstanding.
One milestone that I set myself was the Half Ironman in Ashburton in November 06. My goal was to finish it running and it should also give me a good understanding of where I was at in terms of fitness, endurance and how well I had sorted out my nutrition and to focus on what I could improve over the next few months before the big race.
The race came and went and I so much enjoyed it that when I crossed the finish line in 5.56.59hrs I thought to myself WOW, it is already over…for some reason I had thought that it would take me a lot longer and that it would be a lot harder…of course I had sore legs, but that was about it. I do not recall recovering from any other race quicker than I did from that Half Ironman. And I think I know the answer to that too J: GOOD Nutrition, EXCELLENT Training preparation, OUTSTANDING mental preparedness, AWESOME physio and massage therapist AND PERFORMO. The altitude training has helped me immensely in my recovery, my sleep and my overall feeling in my body. I am excited to do the Ironman and after such a fantastic experience at the Half IM I am sure Taupo will be even better, let alone receiving a high from the atmosphere on race day…
